How to Clean Cellular Shades
To make sure your cellular shades do their job, you’ll need to clean them occasionally. The cellular shades for sliding glass doors, French doors, and windows collect dust and dirt. How to Clean Cellular Shades Regularly
Regular dusting is the best way to clean your cellular shades for your sliding glass doors. Although many fabrics are treated to repel dust and dirt, dust and bugs can get trapped in the cells, just like air. Fortunately, it’s easy to keep them looking nice.
- Use a feather duster or a microfiber cloth to lightly dust the outside of your shades roughly once a week. This simple procedure keeps your shades looking like new.
- For a more thorough dusting, or if you don’t have a duster, gently use the vacuum brush attachment across them.
- Use forced air or the cool setting on a hair dryer to remove the dust and any insects from inside the cells. Make sure to go through each row and clean out the cells.
How to Spot Clean Cellular Shades
If someone spills something on your cellular shades, don’t worry! You can get it out quickly and easily. Simply:
Fill a bucket with lukewarm water (not hot, which can loosen the glue that holds the cells together).
- Add a mild soap or detergent to the water and mix it together.
- Test a small section to ensure it doesn’t discolor the fabric.
- Use a clean cloth to gently dab at the spill or stain.
How to Clean Heavily Soiled Cellular Shades
If your shades have become heavily soiled or stained, you can still clean them. Professional cleaning is available, but if you want to do it on your own:
Start with one section at a time so you remember whether the cellular shades are for your French doors, the living room, or the bedroom.Fill a tub with lukewarm water (hot water can cause the glue that holds the cells together to come apart, so verify the temperature).
- Add a few drops of mild detergent or soap.
- Test a small section to ensure the mix won’t further stain the fabric.
- Gently lay the shades in the tub and swish them back and forth.
- Remove the shades from the tub, drain it, and refill it with lukewarm water.
- Place the cellular shades back into the tub and rinse them out.
- Repeat until the shades are clean.
- Hang your shades and leave them open to dry.
